We can't print a head-to-head cost number because Smart FDS doesn't share theirs publicly. What we can say: AcreTrail's pricing is on the website, and you can start a trial without scheduling a sales call. If hard cost math matters to you up front, that's the cleaner experience.

Where Smart FDS is the better fit

We don't think AcreTrail is the right tool for every farm. Smart FDS is genuinely strong in three areas where we are not:

→ Compliance-grade herd share infrastructure. Smart FDS stores signed member agreements per customer, separates one-time buy-in fees from ongoing agistment fees, and lets you lock required items (like weekly milk) so members can't accidentally skip them. Several states regulate raw milk herd shares closely, and these are real legal protections.
→ Bottle deposit tracking. If you run a glass-bottle dairy with deposits and returns, Smart FDS has a built-in ledger for it. AcreTrail handles this through Stripe credits or manual adjustments, which works but isn't as clean.
→ Food hub / multi-producer mode. If you aggregate products from several farms and sell as one storefront, Smart FDS supports that. AcreTrail is single-farm only.
→ Multi-driver delivery routes. A driver app with assigned manifests and proof-of-delivery is real value for larger operations running multiple vehicles.

If your farm needs any of those four things, Smart FDS is the better tool. We'd rather you find that out before signing up than after.

Where AcreTrail is the better fit

→ You'd rather evaluate software than book a demo. AcreTrail publishes pricing, lets you start a free trial without a credit card, and has a public live demo. You can decide in five minutes whether it's worth a closer look.
→ Your customers want a real mobile app. The Pro plan ships a custom-branded app to the App Store and Play Store with your farm's name and colors. Smart FDS gives customers a web portal, not a native app.
→ You run a mixed operation. Herd share, weekly delivery route, and made-to-order custom cuts are all first-class features in one tool. You don't need to bolt on a separate workflow for any of them.
→ You're a solo operator. Smart FDS's feature set (multi-producer, food hub, multi-driver) reflects a larger operation. If you're one or two people running the whole farm, AcreTrail is built for that shape.
→ You want to be live in a day, not a week. AcreTrail's self-serve onboarding is 24 hours. Smart FDS's white-glove setup is under a week.

I'm a software developer in southwest Washington. I'm also a customer of a dairy farm here that runs local deliveries. They were drowning in text-message orders, so I built AcreTrail.

Common questions

My state requires signed herd share contracts. Can AcreTrail handle that? +

Today, no. We don't have first-class member-contract storage. Farms using AcreTrail typically store signed contracts in a shared drive or e-sign tool and link to them from the customer record. If your state regulator wants the contracts inside the platform itself, Smart FDS is the safer choice today. If a "contracts" feature would change your decision, please tell us, that signal helps us prioritize.

Do you support glass bottle deposits? +

Not as a first-class feature. Farms running deposits today either price the bottle into the product or issue Stripe credits when bottles come back. Smart FDS has a built-in deposit ledger; if that's mission-critical to you, they're the better fit.

Can I switch to AcreTrail without losing my member history? +

Yes. We import your member list and product catalog from a CSV export, you set your pickup schedule and any recurring herd share subscriptions, and your members get an invite to the new app. Most farms migrate in a weekend with a personal walkthrough.

Why don't you publish "no transaction fees" like Smart FDS does? +

Because we do charge a small platform fee, and we'd rather be honest about it. A flat $1 per standard order or 2.5% on subscriptions and made-to-order keeps the monthly base price low ($9 to $59) without us needing to make up the difference somewhere else. Standard Stripe processing applies on both platforms.

Is this really maintained by one person? +

Yes, and that's the point. You get direct support from the person who builds the product, not a ticket queue. The tradeoff: no done-for-you setup team, no 24/7 phone support. If your farm needs those, Smart FDS is the better fit.
